this week with a more spirited president obama trading jabs with republican rival mitt romney on everything from immigration to taxes. national polls show the race still very much a toss-up, and swing state surveys continue to tighten. we welcome in our panel this week. so kim, i talked to a lot of democrats this week who were elated by the president's performance. they say that the king is back. he's really rocking now. here. and both governor romney and i agree actually that we should lower our corporate tax rate. it's too high. i want to close loopholes that allow companies to deduct expenses when they move to china that allow them to profit offshore and not have to get taxed so they have tax advantages offshore. all those changes in our tax code would make a difference. now, governor romney actually wants to expand those tax breaks. one of his big ideas when it comes to corporate tax reform would be to say if you invest overseas, you make profits overseas, you don't have to pay u.s. taxes. of course if you're a small business or a big business starting up here, you've got to pay even the reduced rate that governor romney is talking about. and it's estimated that that will create 800,000 new jobs. the problem is they'll be in china. or india. or germany. that's not the way we're going to create jobs here. the way we're going to create jobs here is not just to change our tax code, but also to double our exports. we are on pace to double our exports, that's creating tens and thousands of jobs all a

by the republican challenger mitt romney and lost very much by president obama. but yesterday in santa barbara, i told this giant room full of people in this theater when asked about this subject that as clearly and as cleanly as mr. romney won the the debate, it still seems politically important that mr. romney did not win the debate in a way that produced a single sound byte. i mean, yeah, 60 million people watched romney win the debate overall, but for the 240 or so million american who is did not watch the debate who might have been curious about how it went, there was no single sound byte to take away from the debate to remember and repeat as the reason that mr. romney won. and so i sat at this event that even though romney won that night, won on debate night, there wasn't any day two story that could explain to people why it was that he won. i said, really, thinking about it, the only line, the single line that survived the debate, the only line that i think anybody can remember from the debate, i said this to a room of 2,000 people. there's one line that everybody can remember from that de

and afghanistan. serious news tonight on afghanistan, as mitt romney committed without any qualification to the idea that troops should be withdrawn from afghanistan in 2014. this is a reversal for mitt romney, in terms of his previous stated conditions on that idea. he previously said i don't think you set hard and fast deadlines. that was to abc news on july 29th. i think the biggest mistake he, meaning president obama has made in afghanistan was announcing the specific date that he would withdraw. he said this president has done an extraordinary thing he announced the date of our withdrawal. that was wrong. mr. romney today just flat out reversing his previous rejection to there being a withdrawal date from afghanistan, as he very tightly hugged president obama on everything from drones to egypt to syria to a number of other matters tonight on which there was less disagreement than we might have expected before the debate. chris matthews? what's your take? >> let me take my favorite role for a minute, my role of critic. you think about the united states. let's talk about our country i

came out with a strong and aggressive performance against mitt romney on foreign policy. the first instant poll from cbs shows 53% of undecided voters say president obama came out on top, just 23% say toward romney. but there are some differing opinions out there. according to cnn poll, only 40% of viewers say romney won but 60% say he is ready to handle the responsibilities of president. and 32% of independents say they are now more likely to vote for romney after last night's performance. that is surprising since by most accounts president obama effectively painted romney as untested reckless and inconsistent when it comes to foreign policy. he also mocked romney's knowledge of the military with the most popular zinger of the night. when romney complained that the navy has its smallest fleet in nearly 100 years, here is the president's response. >> obama: governor we also have fewer horses and bayonets because the nature of our military's changed. we have these things called aircraft carriers where plan

, the fireworks predicted on that topic never materialized, megyn, governor romney did not press the administration's handling of libya but did say the president is turning his back on an increasing threat from radical islam around the middle east. the president went on the offense numerous times through the this debate and particularly intense exchange he accused romney of being wrong on foreign policy every time he is offered an opinion. governor romney fired back saying attacking me is not an agenda. as predicted, the debate turned about 15 minutes in to domestic policy and the u.s. economy. governor romney did attack president obama for a lack of leadership on syria. tonight the president reiterating that syrian president bashar assad, his days are numbered a year after saying really the same thing and after more than 30,000 syrians have died there. governor romney, perhaps struggled to put distance between his policy and obama policy saying he clearly did not want to pledge u.s. troops to any operation in syria. there is no political appetite for u.s. intervention in syria.
